5 Questions Solo Female Travelers Are Sick of Hearing
As a solo traveler, you anticipate a lot of awkward questions; in fact, it’s usually the same old questions time and time again. It’s almost as if the idea of a woman traveling around the world on her own seems unheard of or crazy.
Some questions are impossible to dodge such as “where are you from?” or “where have you been” and most of the time, I have no problem answering them (assuming I’m not incredibly jetlagged or hungry).
But there are other questions that I can’t help but cringe when I hear them when it feels like you are personally being scrutinized for being a total rebel. Here are 5 questions that every solo female traveler is just so tired of hearing.
Isn’t it really dangerous to travel alone as a female?
There are a lot of things I wouldn’t do at home such as wandering off with strangers or going into neighborhoods I don’t know late at night. Why would I do any of this in another country?
And traveling isn’t inherently dangerous and the idea that it’s a scary thing for women is so overplayed. Maybe I know karate or know where to kick a dude in the balls. But more often than ever I find during solo travel that it’s genuinely a lot safer, maybe more than at home.
Don’t you ever get lonely?
Of course, that’s why I bring my teddy bear, Mr. Cuddles. Traveling has its ups and downs and there are sometimes when I feel isolated or alone.
But then, I can do whatever I want. If I didn’t feel like sightseeing I could just stay in my hotel room and eat an entire cake while watching Netflix.
Normally when I feel alone I go on walking tours or day trips to meet other people. I might message friends on social media or hang out in the common room of my hotel or hostel and talk to other guests. In traveling, you are never really alone.

Will you ever settle down?
Life isn’t some shopping list of things to achieve like a house, car or having kids. Sure it’s nice and everything but my first love is travel, everything else can wait. I don’t want to travel when I’m older with no energy to walk up a flight of stairs.
The role of matriarch just isn’t the same like 20 or 30 years ago, I’m not going to spend my weekends cutting out coupon clippings and knitting in my living room corner (though I do enjoy both activities).
My dream is freedom and the only way I feel free is through traveling.
But isn’t India (or some other country) really unsafe for women?
Every county has its issues but you can’t judge an entire nation due to some bad stories. India is huge, with a billion people or even more. Women do go to such destinations all on their own and never have any bad experience.
Regardless of whatever horror stories you might hear, that still shouldn’t discourage you from going. Bad things can happen anywhere and if you take the right precautions like you would in any place then you shouldn’t worry. I always make sure I dress the part, have travel insurance and let people know where I am going and what I’m doing.
I also don’t do anything that I wouldn’t do at home, this basically means don’t be stupid and put yourself in a situation that you wouldn’t if you weren’t traveling.
The more you travel, the more you develop a gut instinct and know to avoid things or situations that might leave you in a pickle.

Why have you started traveling?
This question always implies that I’m running from something like a failed relationship or other disasters. I mean, don’t most of us travel to find ourselves anyway?
I was bored and tired of the monotony of daily life, I wasn’t escaping but rather looking for new ways to enjoy life and gain a fresh perspective. I met other solo female travelers who sold everything to go travel because they had an epiphany one day that is was “now or never”.
And to be honest, it could be “now or never” so why not start traveling now?
